LucidGlass

A frosted glass lens that blurs, tints and bends whatever is sitting behind it.

A squircle-shaped glass lens you drop on a source. It blurs, frosts, tints, bends the light at the edge and magnifies what is underneath.

Use it for callouts, camera frames, lower thirds, or any panel that needs to sit over a busy background and still be readable.

Everything it does

Key features

  • Squircle lens with its own width, height, corner radius, squircleness and edge feathering
  • Position the lens anywhere on the source, independent of the source transform
  • Gaussian blur with a Low, Medium and High level plus a separate intensity slider
  • Frost noise on top of the blur, from smooth glass to heavy frosting
  • Tint colour and strength
  • Edge distortion with its own thickness and falloff, so the light bends at the rim the way real glass does
  • Magnification, so the lens can zoom what is behind it
  • Chromatic aberration that splits the colour channels along the edge
  • Outer glow and inner glow, each with a directional mode and an angle
  • Drop shadow with offset, blur, colour and opacity
  • Transparent background option, so only the lens renders and the rest of the source drops out

Glass that actually refracts

The lens does not just blur a rectangle. It bends the sample position near the rim, which is what makes the pattern behind it stretch and curl as it reaches the edge, and it magnifies the middle.

That rim behaviour is the whole trick. Without it a frosted panel reads as a blurred box, not as glass sitting on top of something.

The source on its own.

Blur level, then blur intensity

Blur Level picks the sampling quality: Low is fastest, High looks best. Blur Intensity then fine-tunes the radius on top of that.

Keeping them separate means you can run a wide, soft blur on Low when you need the frames back, without giving up the look entirely.

Based on work by 4eckme

The lens maths started from the shader Apple liquid glass replicate by 4eckme on Shadertoy, and grew from there into the OBS filter with the shape, glow, shadow and aberration controls.

History

Patch notes

v1.3.0
  • Blur Level is a Low, Medium and High dropdown now, with a separate Blur Intensity slider on top. Faster on Low, better on High
  • New Chromatic Aberration section, with strength, thickness and falloff
  • Fixed blur samples near the corners grabbing the wrong row
  • Slider ranges raised so the shader works on 4K sources
v1.2.0
  • Inner glow folded into the outer glow path, so both share one set of directional masks
v1.1
  • Two opposing highlights now, instead of one off-centre blob
v1.0
  • Squircle lens with blur, frost, tint, edge distortion, magnification, outer and inner glow and a drop shadow
